Overview
Travel + Leisure is a global travel media brand built around destinations, hotels, food, culture, experiences, and travel inspiration. Unlike a conventional corporate website, the platform needs to work as an editorial destination in its own right. Visitors arrive with very different intentions - some are looking for their next destination, others are researching a hotel, reading travel advice, or simply browsing for inspiration.
The goal was to create an experience where a large volume of editorial content still feels curated, discoverable, and easy to navigate.
The Challenge
The problem isn't a lack of content - it's helping the right person find the right content
A large editorial platform has a very different problem from a standard content website. Travel + Leisure covers a broad range of topics: destinations, hotels, cruises, food and drink, travel news, trip ideas, and practical travel advice.
The experience needed to handle a substantial content library without allowing the interface to become overwhelming. At the same time, travel is highly visual - a destination, hotel, restaurant, or experience often needs to be understood through imagery before a visitor decides to read further.
Our Approach
Discovery first - not search first
The information architecture gives visitors clear routes into destinations, experiences, travel advice, and editorial categories, while search and contextual recommendations help them continue exploring. The homepage acts less like a traditional landing page and more like an evolving editorial front page.
Rather than expecting a visitor to know exactly what they are looking for before they arrive.
Editorial Experience
Comfortable to read - with reasons to keep exploring
The article page is at the centre of the platform. Content needs to be comfortable to read while still giving the visitor reasons to continue exploring. Clear headlines, strong imagery, structured article layouts, author information, related stories, and recommendations create a balance between focused reading and further discovery.
This is particularly important for travel content. A visitor reading about a hotel may naturally want to explore the destination, nearby experiences, restaurants, or another property. The experience supports those transitions without taking the reader away from the primary story too quickly.
Visual Storytelling
Photography as part of the editorial hierarchy
Travel is an inherently visual category, so photography plays a central role in the experience. Destination imagery, hotel photography, food, landscapes, and experiences are given prominence throughout the platform.
The design uses imagery not simply as decoration but as part of the editorial hierarchy. A strong image can establish the destination immediately, while the accompanying headline gives the visitor a reason to continue. This creates a rhythm between image, story, and discovery across the site.
A rhythm between image, story, and discovery - across every page.
Content Discovery
A connected content experience - not a collection of isolated articles
With a large editorial library, navigation alone isn't enough. The experience connects related stories and recommendations throughout the journey, allowing visitors to move naturally from one piece of content to another.
Someone researching a destination can continue into hotels and travel experiences. A reader exploring food content can discover restaurants, destinations, or additional travel stories.
Search & Navigation
Two different behaviours - one seamless platform
The platform serves both casual browsers and visitors with a specific intent. For visitors who know what they want, search and category navigation provide a direct route. For visitors who are simply exploring, curated editorial sections and recommendations create opportunities for discovery.
Specific intent
Search and category navigation deliver a direct, focused path to the right content.
Open exploration
Curated editorial sections and contextual recommendations surface relevant stories throughout the journey.
Technology & Publishing
A platform built for a constantly changing editorial environment
A publication at this scale needs more than an attractive frontend. The platform must support structured editorial content, authors, categories, imagery, recommendations, search, advertising placements, analytics, and publishing workflows. The technology has to stay largely invisible to the reader while allowing the editorial team to publish, organise, and surface stories efficiently.
The Outcome
A large content library that still feels curated and easy to explore
The resulting experience turns a very large travel content library into a digital destination that remains easy to explore. Visitors can arrive with a specific question or with no plan at all and still find a natural path through the content.
A platform designed not just to deliver articles, but to make people want to keep exploring.
